Resolume Arena DMX Control: A Practical Setup Guide
Resolume Arena DMX Control: A Practical Setup Guide
Can Resolume Arena control DMX lighting?
Yes. Resolume Arena can send DMX/ArtNet data to lighting fixtures directly from your composition, letting you trigger and control lights the same way you trigger video clips — synced to the same BPM, cue, or scene as your visuals. This is standard practice for VJs who also handle basic lighting on smaller shows, and for AV technicians who need visuals and lighting to move together without two separate operators.
Live DMX control vs. visualizer pre-programming
There are two distinct ways to work with DMX in a Resolume-integrated workflow, and knowing which one you need changes your entire prep process.

Live control. You map DMX/ArtNet fixtures directly and trigger lighting changes in real time, alongside your visuals, during the show itself. This is fast and reactive but leaves less room for precision — you’re operating both systems live.
Visualizer pre-programming. Before the show, you build and test your lighting cues inside a lighting visualizer — a 3D simulation of your actual rig — so you can pre-program complex sequences and confirm they look right before any real fixture is powered on. This is the approach used for larger productions where lighting cues need to be locked in advance and simply triggered on cue during the live show.

Why most VJs skip this — and why that’s changing
DMX and ArtNet come from the lighting world, not the VJ world, so most Resolume users never touch it. But on mid-size to large shows, clients increasingly expect one operator — or one integrated system — to handle both visuals and basic lighting cues. Knowing this workflow puts you in a smaller, more hireable group of AV technicians.
What this actually looks like in practice
- Fixture profiles get set up and addressed correctly (this is where most first attempts fail)
- ArtNet universes are mapped inside Resolume
- Cues get built and tested — live or in a visualizer — before the show
- Lighting is triggered alongside visuals from the same interface
